LAKE COUNTY PEARS - A LITTLE ABOUT PEARS - ADOBE CREEK PACKING

When people hear the word PEAR they usually think of the Bartlett.

The Bartlett is usually picked green and has to be allowed to ripen to a soft yellow color. The best way to do this is to leave the pear on your kitchen counter for a few days until it starts to soften and turn yellow. If you push gently on the top of the pear by the stem and it gives just a little to the pressure then it is ready to eat. To store the pears at this point just put them in the refrigerator and they should hold for about a week. Of course if you like them a little crunchy then put them in the refrigerator before they become soft.
The Bartlett is the most popular pear and the most recognizable to the consumer. It is the sweetest and juiciest of the eating pears. But there are other varieties that Adobe Creek Packing has in addition to the Bartlett. Take for instance the STARCRIMSON.

And then there are the BOSC and GOLDEN RUSSET BOSC
Bosc and Golden Russet Bosc are known as winter pears. Besides being good eating pears they are used in baking and as dessert pears. They have a brownish green color when picked and will turn a golden yellow hue while ripening. They do not give to pressure but the stem end of the Bosc will begin to shrivel when ripe.

And let us not forget the ROSI RED
